What is Cody Ransom’s purpose?
July 10, 2009, 9:00 am
Cody Ransom has demonstrated neither power nor patience at the plate this season yet he is still with the team. He has 4 errors in 23 games and an UZR/150 of -20.5 yet he is still with the team. Eric Hinske sits on the bench while Cody Ransom is not only still with the team but starting at third. Now, at what point do the Yankees just drop Ransom and replace him with a useful player (such an act is long overdue)? I ask, what is his purpose if he can’t hit, field or run? Meanwhile, Ramiro Pena is in the minors learning how to play the outfield…
What gives?

He’s Angel Berroa’s grandson???????
I’ve been trying to figure this out for a while. Especially now that the Yankees have added Hinske (who is no stranger to 3rd base) to their lineup. Yesterday, however, Ransom did manage to get 2 RBIs. Of course, one of them was from a bases-loaded walk…
Exactly. With Hinske around, sure, he may not be the best defensive 3B but he can certainly hit more than Ransom can. At least he has that going for him. The Yankees have Ransom on the team presumably because he can play 2B and SS (I think?) if need be. However, his presence makes no sense when Ramiro Pena’s ceiling is as a utility IF (and he’s actually a good defensive player with some wheels).
For some reason they keep resting ARod against LHP, then Girardi looks at the career splits against lefties and sees Ransom is better than Hinske. That is true, but Hinske is decent against RHP and Ransom’s numbers against LHP reek of small sample size and frankly he is awful against everyone right now and a pitcher with no arms would likely retire Ransom quite easily.
I assume Hinske can’t be any worse than Ransom at defense at 3B, so why they don’t try to rest ARod against righties and start Hinske at 3B those games is totally beyond me.
Then again, I would DFA Ransom and either call Pena back up or pry a half decent UIF away from another team.
[...] Meanwhile, the always useful Cody Ransom still has a job… [...]
Duh Cody Ransom has been doing ok recently and they keep him on the team because he’s one of the only players that are able to play multiple positions… You’d know that if you paid attention.
And eric hinske? Eww no.
He’s hit well since the All-Star break, but I would consider it a fluke given the rest of his season. Plus, he’s not good defensively. He’s a negative IF that costs his team runs. His bad glove work outweighs his bat’s uptick.
