Olney’s take on the Wang-Phillies rumor

June 29, 2009, 3:30 pm

Here’s more on the Phillies-Wang rumor from an online chat with Buster Olney (ESPN):

Jake (Sacramento)

Buster, is there any substance to the Phillies’ interest in Chien-Ming Wang, and if so, what might the Yankees ask for in return for the former Ace?

Buster Olney

Jake: They would want young pitching in return, unquestionably — that is what Brian Cashman has been trying to collect. But my guess is that the Yankees will view Wang’s value as commensurate with a guy who can win 20 games, and the Phillies are probably thinking they might be able to bottom feed and get him for 50 cents on the dollar.

If the Yankees want young pitching in return for Wang, I ask, why trade Wang or even consider it, then? Wang is a young pitcher who is, for now, an inexpensive commodity. Maybe if the Phillies were willing to deal J.A. Happ and a bat I would consider it, but that’s not going to happen. It seems as though Cashman would listen to inquiries regarding Wang, though, which I think is both interesting and strange.

  1. Cashman definitely has a “personal” reason to do so.
He screwed up Wang’s rehab TWICE and is responsible for Wang’s struggle this season.
I won’t be surprised if Cashman wants to get rid of the living proof of his incompetence as a GM.
