Scout bashes A-Rod
June 26, 2009, 10:30 amHere’s what an anonymous scout speaking to Jayson Stark (ESPN) had to say about Alex Rodriguez:
“He looks like he’s aged about five years overnight. He can’t move. He can’t run. And when he does run, he looks like he’s got a weight belt on. I see that guy with nine years left on his contract, and I say, ‘Uh-oh.’”
Hmmm, rather than attributing A-Rod’s lack of movement to a miraculous night of aging, perhaps we should point to the hip surgery that he had only a few months ago? Why not give some actual feedback on his slump in terms of what he’s doing wrong rather than bash the guy completely? Saying, “He can’t run,” is probably one of the dumbest evaluative statements I’ve ever heard (what an articulate scout!).
What else can you expect from Stark (and his unnamed scout), though, who only a few months ago wrote that Alex had completely “destroyed” baseball’s history. Maybe we’re supposed to believe that a writer’s personal feelings regarding particular players do not actually influence or dictate the direction of such anonymous scouting “reports” and information (insert laughter, here)? Sure, okay…
UPDATE - The guys over at RAB had a similar writeup regarding an article from Buster Olney.

Olney has something similar on his blog from yesterday, pretty obviously drawing the PED connection. Personally I’d say you have to give him a little more time to work out the kinks, but he definitely does seem to be moving more gingerly in all facets of hisgame.
Thanks, Drew. I understand the desire to connect the dots between A-Rod’s performance and PED usage. But I, like you, agree that you have to give the guy time since he is coming off of hip surgery. I think we’ll see his stolen base totals fall this year—it’ll be a significant drop, too—but I think that was expected once the surgery was scheduled.
Very cognitive, thank you.
