Klapisch ponders Andy’s decision

January 10, 2009, 2:07 pm

Bob Klapisch has a pretty solid read out about Andy Pettitte’s current contractual ongoings with the Yankees. He wonders if Andy will get anything close to $10 million from another team and believes that the offer was reasonable for a 5th starter (I concur).

It appears as though Andy and his agents don’t believe that the Yankees have a spending limit, but, as Klapisch points out, Hal Steinbrenner is a bit more frugal than his father. Interestingly, Klapisch also says this frugality is the main reason the Yankees are trying to move Nick Swisher or Xavier Nady (so for those who say, let’s keep them all, that is something to take into account).

Sox get Saito

January 10, 2009, 1:45 pm

Another low-risk, high-reward signing for Boston. I’m surprised the Yankees weren’t in on this one. Saito would have been a huge help in the bullpen and could have allowed the 8th inning to be a foregone conclusion (if he is, indeed, healthy), which it currently is not. While I don’t necessarily like the idea of signing Juan Cruz, Saito would have been a steal (even with some incentives).

The Sox have quietly strengthened their team this winter.

The hell with it, I’m still excited…

January 10, 2009, 4:59 am

MLB 09 (The Show), the best baseball video game of all time, will feature… Dustin Pedroia on the cover (last year, we had the stereotypical slugger in Ryan Howard). He is the reigning (AL) MVP, so I guess it makes sense, although I’ll probably gag every time I take the game out of its case. Make no mistake, I am one of the biggest MLB fans around (I basically bought PS3 for the game) and if you’re any good, maybe we can play via PS3’s online network.

Read more about MLB 09, here.

See some decent screenshots, here.

Man, I’m syked. Excuse me while I scream with joy like this kid.

Pavano peeved by 2005 misdiagnosis?

January 10, 2009, 1:08 am

First and foremost, I would never defend Carl Pavano and, with that said, that’s not my intention here. But, in order to shed some light on crazy Carl’s comments from Cleveland, here’s a fairly forgotten article from September (via Tyler Kepner). Basically, in 2005, Pavano was “misdiagnosed” (his words) by team doctor Stuart Hershon. Hershon found that Pavano had rotator cuff tendinitis and only rotator cuff tendinitis. However, later Dr. James Andrews (the one and only) found that Pavano actually had a seriously problematic elbow, too.

Again, I’m not defending him. I’m just showing both sides of the story here.
