BREAKING: YANKS SIGN TEIXEIRA

December 23, 2008, 3:34 pm

HAHAHAHA! 8-year deal worth more than $170 million.

Heyman broke the news.

UPDATE – It’s an 8-year deal worth $180 million.

UPDATE  - With CC, A.J. and now Tex, in tow, the Yankees have one of the better teams in recent memory. The addition of Tex is especially important as it likely signals the following:

  • The Yankees won’t sign Manny
  • The Yankees probably won’t bring back Pettitte
  • Either IPK, Phil Hughes or Aceves could be the 5th starter
  • Nick Swisher will be a corner OF (he’s not a platoon player)
  • Damon will be your regular CF
  • Xavier Nady will be a corner OF (probably RF)
  • Don’t expect a Mike Cameron trade
  • Gardner will probably be the 4th OF
  • Melky will start the season in AAA
  • Goodbye Bobby Abreu and farewell Jason Giambi

Many of these moves are predicated upon payroll concerns (Pettitte, Cameron). If Andy would have agreed to his deal sooner, he may have prohibited the Yankees from signing Teixeira. I think the Dodgers have to like this signing as they’ll be able to pursue Manny and Pettitte, while the Red Sox and Mets will compete for Derek Lowe.

UPDATE (7:56 pm) - The Red Sox were outbid by $12 million. Also, Tex’s deal includes a $5 million signing bonus and a no-trade Santa clause.

  1. I cant believe it…but way to go and GET IT DONE!!!

Go Yanks, got my christmas gift ;)

  2. This is the best off-season, ever.

  3. most certainly is, too bad we’ll be paying for it for YEARS to come! Oh my those ticket prices. Cant ruin the fun though:)

    CC Sabathia $160 million
    AJ Burnett $85 million
    Mark Teixeira $180 million

Swooping in at the last minute and taking Tex from the Red sox…………………………………..PRICELESS

  4. Haha, exactly. This is as good as signing Manny Ramirez. Every Sox fan I spoke with had a cocky attitude and thought it was a done deal. Now look at them. They’ll be battling for… Derek Lowe.

  5. HAHAHA I Love being a Yankee Fan!!

  6. People will hate us even more, but that’s the way the world works, right? The sky is blue and people hate the Yankees.

  7. bring the hate on, it keeps me moving, thats when you know we’re doing something right. Already got several angry txt messages already!
Must be nice, live it up guys as someone already wrote its a “merry tex-mas”

  8. Tex’s dislike for the Sox was the key(goes all the way back to the draft). As much as Manny may have helped Arod…at least we don’t have to worry about any drama. Plus the kids probably get a shot to pich in the 5 spot.

  9. Exactly. The move opens up the team for some more youth, which is always an added plus.

  10. When I saw the breaking news on espn i threw up a little inside my mouth. This is really just not good for baseball and I love the sport so much I think i’m going to stop being a Yankee fan.h

  11. Think of it this way, though. Everywhere the Yankees go, they will sell out seats. That will happen across the country and, in that case, it’s actually very good for baseball.

  12. i love the yankees.

  13. Fuck yes!!
