Is this the type of player the Yankees need?
December 11, 2008, 9:34 pmFrom Mark Bowman (MLB):
With the Braves, Burnett would find himself as the focus of the starting rotation. But some have said this likely wouldn’t be as appealing to him as the opportunity to be just a component of a Yankees rotation that will be showcased by Sabathia.
Sorry to break it to A.J. Burnett, but if you sign a 5-year deal worth $80 million plus, then yes, you’ll be a primary focus in the Yankees’ rotation (even if you’r name is not CC Sabathia). I wonder, is this the type of player the Yankees need? Don’t you want someone who’s going to want to be your ace, no matter who the other pitchers in your rotation are? It’s not like Burnett doesn’t have the talent…

There is winners, losers and guys that just collect paychecks.
God given talent has nothing to do with any of those.
What would Manny be then? He has god given talent, but doesn’t try and sometimes doesn’t even play. He has a bad attitude. However he will go down as one of the five greatest right handed hitters of alltime and has two world series rings and a world series MVP.
manny enjoys the spotlight. he has his moments and can be terrible, at times, but i think a lot of it had to do with him playing in a city which he definitely did not like. that marriage was acidic for a long time, and finally, in 2008 (and after years of asking to be relocated) the thing exploded. i do think you’ll get more of a dodger-like style of play from manny in a new city rather than a boston-style of play (towards the end of his boston career is what i’m referring to).
in terms of burnett, he has a lot of risks, built into this one other aspect of his personality. when you’re in new york and making a lot of money, whether you like it or not, you’re expected to be better than perfect. people know about his talent and will expect him to be a 3rd ace (with wang and cc). if he doesn’t deliver the media will make a big deal out of it and we’ll have to see how that turns out (if he does sign, of course).
My point was….you can have God given talent and be either a winner/loser or a paycheck clollector.
In Manny’s case …he has the talent and is a winner and comes with bonus of being half a “nutjob”! (and let’s never forget Luis Sojo)
Manny hated every minute in Boston…hated the fans….I know….I’m stuck up here too.
They turn on their heroes like Dobermans….remember Nomar, remember the chants…then they drove him out of town on a rail.
I won’t get into the truth about Manny’s displeasure in Boston…..but let’s say manny despite his free spirit is not stupid like people believe……and I don’t really like the guy but his ability as ahitter id indisputable.
At this point, I’m not sure his nonsense is much worse/distracting then ARod’s…it just comes in different colors.
Nice Blog . . I hope the Yankees land Burnett . I know he’s been hurt . . but the man has some of the best stuff in baseball . .and he’s the power pitcher the Yankees NEED !
^finally. you’re actually the first fan to tell me that they want to see burnett in pinstripes. burnett has a lot of talent and if he can stay healthy, he could do a lot of damage. thanks for stopping in.
