Dodgers Interested in Pettitte
November 27, 2008, 11:56 pmThe Dodgers do, in fact, have an interest in Andy Pettitte. At this point, resigning Andy seems like a must, as long as he accepts a pay cut though. Andy is supposedly seeking the full $16 million he earned last year, but his performance this season doesn’t seem to justify that amount. If the Yankees let him walk—something I can’t see them doing—then they could recoup with some solid draft picks. Then again, they really need him, right?

Hey man, I love Andy Pettitte as much as the next Yankee fan but he is NOT worth $16 million a year anymore. Honestly, he wasn’t worth the initial $16 million he got in 2007 but we had to overpay to get him. I’d love to have him back but closer to $12 million for one year.
I concur; given that the Yankees were incredible supportive during the whole HGH scandal, Andy should realise that loyalty flows both ways, here. He surely cannot expect $16 million for one year, given his recent stats. Does he REALLY need the extra $4 million or so THAT much?
He must have an incredible ego to want his contract sorted out now, before the Yankees have been able obtain the services of any other free-angent pitcher.
I agree. I think Andy doesn’t intend on signing with the Dodgers and is just using them in order to maintain his current salary, but at some point, the Yankees are going to have to draw the line.
that’s a good question, whether the Yanks really need him. I really think Andy will have an incredible season especially if they sign CC and a lot of the pressure is directed towards himand any other pitcher they sign. Andy isn’t worth 16 million though. For one year, how much is he worth?
Money aside, I think the Yankees should sign Pettitte and get it over with. At least we’ll have one lefty, even if he is at the back end of the rotation.
I guess he’s factoring in “need” when he asks for $16 million. In terms of “need,” yes, the Yankees need him and can pay that much because the need for another, (lefty) solid starter is paramount. But, when you actually factor in “loyalty,” the Yankees deserve a break. Ha, it’s interesting how these qualitative, intangible elements are ultimately shaping Pettitte’s contract, in the end.
If it keeps them from signing Derek Lowe to a 4 year deal, then yes Pettitte is worth $16M for one season.
He only made like $400K when they won the 96 World Series, so if mentally anyone can’t get over giving him $16M this season, just think of it as back payment for that year. Basically, $16.4M for 96 and 09 rolled into one, so he is really only making $8.2M this year, and no one is going to argue with giving Pettitte a one year $8.2M deal.
