November 18, 2008, 7:27 pmNow that the Cubs have brought back Ryan Dempster, they’re likely out of the Peavy sweepstakes. In fact, now they’re reportedly looking to flip their younger players — players that were probably going to get dealt to the Padres — to the Royals, instead, for the left-handed hitting Mark Teahen (hey, no love for Bobby Abreu?).
This means that the talks will continue, with the Braves, Angels and maybe even the Yankees heading to the forefront of possible suitors for Peavy. It’s a long-shot, meaning Peavy would have to man up and stop holding the Padres for ransom by demanding lavish compensation if an AL trade is made, but it could still happen. With the Yankees, anything is ultimately possible.
