Larry Bowa has decided to stay with the LA Dodgers for a second year, effectively ending speculation that he may return to NY as the Yankees’ third base coach. Well, there goes that idea (which was never very realistic to begin with).

Friday’s Bits: CC & Tex, Third Base, Abreu
October 24, 2008, 1:55 pmLet’s get this rolling.
LA VERSUS NY FOR TEX & CC
1. Jon Heyman notes thats the Los Angeles Angels and the New York Yankees will ultimately battle for this winter’s two biggest free agent stars—Mark Teixeira and CC Sabathia. And, Heyman thinks that, in the end, due to the increasingly tough financial context for most baseball teams, the Yankees will likely win both CC and Tex as their new Stadium will provide seemingly unlimited resources. One GM told Heyman, “It’s going to be impossible to outbid the Yankees.”
GIRARDI WANTS BOWA AT THIRD
2. Heyman also mentions that Joe Girardi would like to see Larry Bowa return to third base for the Bombers in 2009. According to Heyman, Bowa actually wants to return East, which is surprising to say the least as I know he left for LA in order to be with Joe Torre. The Dodgers would have to nullify Bowa’s final year as he is contractually obligated to be there in 2009, however, he does have an out-clause, so it’s possible.
THIRD BASE COACH MARKET TIGHTENS
3. One rumored candidate for the third base gig was former Yankee, Mike Gallego. Gallego has decided to join Oakland’s organization (he played there for years), and will serve as their third-base coach and infield instructor. With the loss of Gallego, Dale Sveum and Larry Bowa are pretty much the primary candidates. It will be interesting to see if Bowa returns and if he could give Robinson Cano a swift kick in the pants when necessary.
BOBBY TO CHICAGO?
4. The Chicago Cubs have been searching for a left-handed bat and it appears as though Bobby Abreu could end up interesting them for 2009 (it makes senses offensively, but defensively, have fun).
