JOBA ARRESTED: Learn Your Lesson, NOW

October 18, 2008, 11:32 pm

From PA at LoHud:

Joba Chamberlain was arrested for driving under the influence early Saturday morning near his hometown of Lincoln, Neb.

Deborah Collins, a spokeswoman for the Nebraska State Patrol, said that the 23-year-old Chamberlain was pulled over after being observed speeding in a 2006 BMW 750i shortly after 1 a.m. on U.S. 77.

Chamberlain was arrested after an odor of alcohol was detected and an open container of alcohol was observed on the front passenger seat. Chamberlain was taken to the Cornhusker Place Detox and booked on charges of driving under the influence, having an open container of alcohol and speeding.

This story was broken, based on what I know, by the Journal Star newspaper in Lincoln.

Working on trying to obtain a comment from Joba, his agent, Brian Cashman and/or the Yankees. Nothing as of yet.

This post will be updated as more information becomes available.

UPDATE, 10:49 p.m.: The Yankees have no official comment on the arrest of Chamberlain according to Media Relations Director Jason Zillo.

Here’s the initial report.

I don’t care if Joba Chamberlain is the next Roger Clemens. This type of behavior is NOT acceptable, no matter who you are. The Yankees need to nip this in the bud now, not later, as this could really develop into a problem if it goes unchecked. Joba should have known better. He’s a symbol of the “new” Yankees and a role model to a ton of kids out there. If I know that, he knows that. I don’t care if he’s 23, I’m 22 and I don’t do this nonsense when I drink. Drinking and driving hurts people. If you don’t believe me, ask Jim Leyritz.

Unlikely

October 18, 2008, 3:22 pm

Initially we heard that Jake Peavy would be willing to go to 3 AL teams, if traded (presumably the Yankees, the Angels and Boston, which is a guess). However, as the clock continues to run, it seems as though he’s more and more hesitant about an NL to AL switch. His agent, Barry Axelrod, on Friday, stated that Peavy would need “a lot of convincing” to go to the AL, meaning he’d require a ton of compensation and Peavy himself stated that, if it were up to him, he’d accept a trade to the Houston Astros (his preference).

At this point, I think the Yankees themselves are hesitant to continue entertaining a Peavy trade. Even if this is a mere bargaining tactic (for more money and guaranteed option years), would you really want someone who is this committed to the NL and its style of baseball?
