Cano For Carlos?

October 9, 2008, 12:08 am

From Steve over at WasWatching:

Frank Russo, on New York Baseball Digest Radio’s Yankee Special, mentioned that his connections have shared that the Mets are accepting inquiries for Carlos Beltran. And, further, according to Russo, his sources have also shared that there’s a rumor of a possible deal between the Mets and Yankees which would breakdown as follows:

Carlos Beltran from the Mets to the Yankees in exchange for Robinson Cano (with the Yankees taking on most of Cano’s contract), either Jose Veras or Brian Bruney, Ian Kennedy, and another prospect from the Yankees system.

Hmm, that’s a doozy, huh? It makes sense in terms of needs. The Yankees need a strong defensive CF with good offensive output and the Mets need a capable body at 2B that isn’t Luis Castillo or Damion Easley (plus the bullpen help would ultimately do help the Mets a great deal). But, I wonder, if the Mets want another 2B, why not just rid themselves of Castillo, somehow, and then sign Orlando Hudson? Hudson reportedly wants to play for them and it fits, right?

I’m also interested in the financial situation, if such a trade was to occur. Would the Yankees take on all of Beltran’s contract? He earned over $13 million this year and has another 3-years to go on a $120 million deal. Also, you have to be weary of why the Mets are dumping salary here. They could make a serious run at CC Sabathia, if they choose to go that route (after a Beltran trade).

Again, it’s just a rumor, but it’s a certainly a fascinating one.
