I Doubt Surgery Could Save Joe Girardi’s Credibility…

September 26, 2008, 4:15 am

Last night I reported that Mariano Rivera was getting a routine physical. Now, however, as seen here, that’s simply not the case. In fact, he has a sore shoulder and could need surgery (albeit minor surgery).

Joe Girardi, the secretive government worker, failed to deliver this information last night and the beat writers are up in arms. Brian Cashman broke the news to them and Girardi still acted as if Rivera was having a routine physical for a “cranky body” when questioned about it later. I wrote about Girardi’s problems with disclosure a few weeks, when he hid a Damaso Marte injury and now, it appears as though things have finally reach the point of no return. Girardi should just help himself and start telling the truth, or at least something closer to the truth, or else his tenure in the Bronx will continue to be a bumpy ride.

  1. Wow. The manager lied. Not like Torre ever did that right? Oh yeah the media didn’t call Saint Joe on that EVER.

Girardi is the MANAGER, not the P.R. department. He shouldn’t disclose POSSIBLE injuries to the media. Why does the media believe they are entitled to know ? Where is Mo’s comment???? The media should REPORT not CREATE stories.

  2. The thing is, Brian Cashman was the one who told the writers what was wrong without being pestered. A sore shoulder is not the end of the world, especially when the season is about to end. Torre lied, at times, but he was never so blatant in his lies and he was never disproved so quickly the way Girardi has been, time and time again (the Marte injury is a great example of that).

The media believe they are entitled to know because many of us are entitled to know. We spend money on the team, go to the games, watch them on television and if a main player is not in a game then we’re going to wonder what’s going on. We have the BoSox series coming up and if Marte, Chamberlain or Coke come in to close a game, we’d be pretty pissed at Girardi since it wouldn’t make sense unless there was an injury.

  3. simply needs to be more communication between the manager and the yankee organization (Cashmen). Not entirely Girardi’s fault.

  4. I read on mlb.com that Mo asked Giardi not to say anything to the media about it, because he(Mo) wanted to be the one to release the info. So, really the breakdown is between Cash and Giardi as Giardi appears to have just been following the wishes of Mo. Either way, doesn’t seem like that huge of a deal to me.
