Matsui & Damon Willing To Play First

September 7, 2008, 5:38 am

Tyler Kepner notes that both Johnny Damon and Hideki Matsui have expressed their willingness to play first base next year. While it’s not their preference, they understand that the Yankees will probably be on the lookout for a new first baseman. At this point, I doubt either would see substantial time there. Matsui’s got bad knees and Damon will be in his final year with the team. Why not get a younger and better player now, while there’s one available (Tex)?

  2. If they are not signing Dunn or Tex and plan on using on of their OFers to play 1B next season, why not Nady since he has actually experience there?

Matsui should DH or be traded. Its nice that he wants to play the field to help the team but with the awful condition of his knees, him being in the field hurts the team.

Damon can play a very good LF or an average CF, why would they even consider moving him to 1B?

  3. And I now realize that I should have said this in my previous comment –
I am also willing to play 1B for the Yankees next season. That doesn’t mean I should or will. So, I have that in common with Johnny and Hideki.
