The truth is that Hank and Hal Steinbrenner seem to want to retain Cashman, whose contract expires after the season. My guess is that Cashman does come back, because of his strong working relationship with Hal Steinbrenner and the fact that he seems committed to seeing through the long-term vision he articulated in 2005.
If it wasn’t for Hal’s emergence within the Yankees (albeit behind the scenes), I wouldn’t have been surprised to see Cashman venture to Seattle or to another organization after the 2008 season. At this point, its seems pretty clear that Hal Steinbrenner is the go-to-guy (not Hank) in regards to baseball activities. If he is intent on running the organization (efficiently) while his brother Hank makes the media rounds, I’m sure he would want Brian Cashman to stick around since he has a working knowledge of all the talent in the minor leagues. With Hal, it appears as though Cashman still has a lot of power, which is something we all wondered about when the brothers assumed control of the team.
