Discussion: Post Your Lineup

August 15, 2008, 2:49 pm

With money coming off the books, it’s not hard to fathom that there could be major changes in store for the 2009 New York Yankees. Mark Teixeira, Pat Burrell, Adam Dunn, CC Sabathia, Rafael Furcal, Ben Sheets, Manny Ramirez, Rafael Soriano, and others will all be available, so, using the following list of free agents courtesy of MLBTR, what lineup would you like to see throughout 2009 (warning, lineups are subject to change as long as Joe Girardi is the manager)?

Here’s mine:

CF – Johnny Damon
SS – Derek Jeter
1B – Mark Teixeira
3B – Alex Rodriguez
RF – Manny Ramirez (HA!)
DH – Hideki Matsui
C – Jorge Posada
LF – Xavier Nady
2B – Robinson Cano
BN – Justin Christian, Jose Molina, Mark Loretta

Oh, and for my rotation/bullpen:

SP1 – CC Sabathia
SP2 – Chien-Ming Wang
SP3 – Joba Chamberlain
SP4 – Mike Mussina
SP5 – Andy Pettitte
LM – Chase Wright/Kei Igawa/Darrell Rasner
RP – Jose Veras, RP – Chris Britton,
RP – Juan Cruz, RP – Edwar Ramirez
CP – M. Rivera

That’s the team I’d like to see. I’m not 100% sure whether or not Loretta is available, but I believe he is. I think Melky should go back to the minors (or he’ll be traded) since he doesn’t offer much other than defense, which Justin Christian can provide along with a ton of speed (and adequate offensive production). I like Loretta’s IF versatility and that he’s a consistent hitter (goodbye Wilson Betemit).

For pitching there aren’t many surprises in my set. Some may wonder where Phil Hughes or IPK are on this list, but I would be fine with leaving them in AAA for a bit longer (their innings can be controlled from the beginning of the season and then they can be called upon as the year progresses). Also, for middle relief, I think that the Yankees have been getting burned on left-handed relievers these past few years. With that said, why not opt for a left-handed long reliever (Chase Wright is my boy)? That way, you’ll have a lefty in the pen and a long-man. In addition, Juan Cruz (ARIZ), who is headed to free agency, is young and talented and he’d be a solid addition.

So, what would your ideal lineup look like for 2009?

  1. My lineup:
    CF- Damon
    SS- Jeter
    RF- Nady
    3B- Rodriguez
    DH- Ramirez
    LF- Matsui
    C- Posada
    2B- Cano
    1B- Mientkiewicz
    BN- Christian, Molina, Casey, Betemit

    Pitching Staff:
    SP1: Sabathia
    SP2: Wang
    SP3: Chamberlain
    SP4: Mussina
    SP5: Pettitte
    LM- Giese, Rasner
    RP- Marte
    RP- (Edwar) Ramirez
    RP- Veras
    RP- Melancon
    CP- Rivera

    Points:
    1. Sign Mientkiewicz, Ramirez, Sean Casey, and Sabathia.
    2. Casey could platoon with Mientkiewicz and Betemit would provide a subsitute for the positions of 2B, SS, and 3B. Molina would back up Jorge and be a strong defensive replacement. Christian would start from time to time and he could be an effective pinch runner late in games.
    3. Matsui and Ramirez would mostly share DH/LF duties.
    4. Signing Sabathia and resigning Pettitte and Mussina would make that rotation the absolute best in Major League Baseball if Mussina carries this year’s performance into next year and Pettitte is Pettitte.

  2. My lineup:
    CF- Damon / Edmonds
    SS- Jeter
    RF- Nady / Edmonds
    3B- Alex Rodriguez
    1B- Burrell / Posada
DH- Burrell / Posada / Edmonds
    LF- Matsui/Burrell
    C- Posada/ivan Rodriguez
    2B- Cano
BN- Christian (or Gardner ), Casey, Betemit

    Pitching Staff:
SP1-5: Wang/ Ben Sheets / Chamberlain/ Mussina / Pettitte / Hughes (who ever is heathy)
    LM- Giese
    RP- Marte
    RP- (Edwar) Ramirez
    RP- Veras
    RP- Melancon
    CP- Rivera

Sign: Burrell to help out against leftys and play first base ( maybe for 48/4 million instead of 160mil/8 years for Teixeira) other wise see if manny wants to be a fully time DH again and give some starts at first to nady and the bench
Sign: Edmonds to help out in the outfield and against rhp (only need to give him a 1 or 2 year deal maybe base 4 mil + 2 mil incentives )
Sign: Blake to be a super utility guy that can help out everywhere (unless some team offers him a crazy Gary Matthews like contract then he should be less the 5 million a year)

Resign: IRod and have him catch 45% of the games with posada getting more time to heal and stay heathly. not sure how much it would cost but you can’t count on posada to start 80% of the yanks games (best guess is maybe 8 mil)
Sign : Ben sheets he is very good when heathy and the yanks have some depth so all they need is for him to be a great number 3 or 4 starter some of the time (maybe 51 million / 3 years)
Resign: Mussina so has been having a great year and their no reason to think age will catch up to him that drastically (at most a 3 year deal for 45)
Resign: Pettitte again he is wroth the money if you can talk him out of retirement, again (again maybe another 16 mil). if not then go for the best in C.C. and pay the extra 10mil a year and pray he stay healthy.

    Burrell (12 mil)
    Sheets (17 mil)
    Mussina (15 mil)
    Pettitte (16 mil)
    Edmonds (4-6 mil)
    Blake (4-5 mil)
    Irod (8mil)

total contracts worth 76-79 million, the payroll will stay about the same, they will have better pitching, better hitting against LHP, and more depth without having to use replacement level players . And no monster contracts to deal with.

Bonus: sign Rocco Baldelli to a minor league deal with big Incentives and a 2010 team option

  3. CF- Damon
    SS- Jeter
    3B- A-ROD
    1B- Tex
    LF- Manny or Dunn
    RF- Nady
    2B- Cano
    DH- Matsui/ Posada
    C- Posada/ Jose

    Points:

    Sabathia
    Burnett
    Wang
    Joba
    Hughes/Kennedy/Alfredo (or maybe Perez/Lowe/Dempster?)

    RP-Giese
    RP-Edwar
    RP-Jose Veras
    RP-Marte
    RP-Howry
    CL-Rivera

    My guesses

Mark Teixera—8 yrs 168m to Yanks
    Sabathia—6 yrs 100-120m to Yanks
    Ben Sheets/AJ Burnett—4 yrs 52m to Yanks
    Dunn/Manny/Burrell for 4 yrs 50-60m

Sheets is injury prone so Burnett would make the better starter. Of course Sheets is the better pitcher but Burnett is more likely to stay healthy. And, Moose and Pettitte should go. Houston will sign Andy and I don’t know who’ll want Mussina, maybe the Rangers becuz they are desperate for pitching. Giambi will go to Cleveland or Anaheim because they need a first baseman and Francisco Rodriguez will head to Detroit for a 70 mil contract because Todd Jones, Fernando Rodney and Joel Zumaya sucks. Texeira will recieve a 168 mil contract and Sabathia will go to the Yanks for big bucks. He wants to play in the West Coast but money should lure him. If it does not snag CC, sign Burnett anyways and make a run at either Sheets, Oliver Perez, Ryan Dempster or Derek Lowe (although Lowe will be a slightly younger version of Pettitte).

Personally I think this is a great lineup although the Yanks might go bankrupt signing all these guys. Of course if Sabathia does not come the money will be more flexible. Im not really huge for CC so AJ Burnett + Oliver Perez/Ben Sheets would do. Bob Howry should be snagged along the way to add depth. That’s about it.

With a 3-4 punch of Arod and Tex, it’ll be the most feared lineup in the league. I mean, right after Tex/Arod will be Adam Dunn, Manny or Pat Burrell. Then next comes X-Man. Scary, and powerful.

Sabathia will be the Opening Day starter, and right after him is a quality pitcher in Burnett. Wang, our former ace, will step up next. Then it’s Joba, but he might drop to #5. Finally, if we don’t manage to sign a #2 or #3 type of starter in Dempster, Sheets or Perez, then Hughes, Alfredo Aceves (is that how u spell his name???) and probably Kennedy can take up the final slot. Awesome team with loads of depth.

The bench would be quite weak at this point, with just Molina, Betemit, and Melky among others. Melky proved he can’t hit, so ship him with prospects off for a starter like Derek Lowe via sign-and-trade with LAD. Great great great great great team. If Jorge does not make it, sign Rod Barajas to a 1-year deal.

  4. I think the idea of Nientkiewicz that Dan Says put out there is brilliant – 1) we need the D at first and, most importantly, I believe A-Rod will get a boost from having his old friend back.

Sheets big risk because of injuries.

I like Manny there not only for offenxe but I think he will loosen up the clubhouse – this team is way too uptight.

I figure they have a budget of $40-45 million a year to add players (money comes from Giambi – net $18 million, Pavano – $10 million, Abreau $15 million,). This should be enough to get CC, Manny, and Mientky.

3 CC Sabathia will get a 6 year 125 mil contract
4 Francisco Rodriguez will get a 5 year 85 mil contract

  6. Nice work. However, I doubt K-Rod would accept a job as a setup man. He’s going to be a closer and the Yankees can’t afford to pay 15 million for a guy who’s not even going to close regularly for another few years.
