YANKS GRAB NADY AND MARTE
July 25, 2008, 7:56 pmWill Carroll broke the news, but there’s no word on the details (although Phil Coke may have been moved).
UPDATE (8:17): It is believed that the Yankees have traded Jose Tabata, Phil Coke, Ross Ohlendorf (expendable now with our bullpen performing the way it has been), and George Kontos. That’s a great trade for the Yankees. Tabata was the “blue chipper”, but he has a long way to go.
UPDATE (9:10): The deal is pending upon physicals, so it’s pretty much in the bag. This is a great deal for the Yankees. You don’t know what you’re going to get from Tabata, who has had attitude and injury problems in the past (and he’s struggling, but he is just 20). Plus, Kontos and Coke, they’re really very expendable when you look at the depth chart and who knows how they’ll perform down the line. Ohlendorf isn’t even needed anymore and was acquired through the Randy Johnson trade, so it’s not like we groomed him for years. This is a big deal for the Yankees because Nady can slide into RF next year and the Yankees can let Bobby Abreu go. They’re saving money left and right and are going to be ready, financially, to sign some big stars next year (Tex, CC, Sheets, etc.).
UPDATE (9:53): With the addition of Nady, the Yankees can tell Jorge to go through with his surgery.

[...] if he’ll be looked at as a starter or a reliever. TO THOSE STOPPING BY – The Yankees HAVE traded for NADY AND MARTE and the package is believed to be PHIL COKE, OHLENDORF and 2 other prospects or 1 top tier. [...]
From what I saw we are giving up Ohlendorf, Tabata, Coke, and Kontos
I like this move, We are stacked with starting pitchers so the loss of those guys doesn’t hurt much. It hurts to let go of Tabata but you gotta give to get and he isn’t proven but Nady and Marte are.
Yup, I agree. This is actually a GREAT trade for the Yankees.
what a NICE move!
Anyway, I was just in the ESPN.com game thread and there was a guy in there saying Papelbon was better than Mo. LOL.
haha. anyone who says that is just biased.
Haha yeah tremendously
[...] Still On The Radar Although the Yankees addressed 2 of their biggest issues today, picking up a right-handed bat in Xavier Nady and a left-handed reliever in Damaso Marte, [...]
Agreed. Think its a great move. Ohlendorf is very expendable and didn’t really perform that great anyways. The other two pitchers are waayyy down on the prospect list, and I believe they are both already 26 or older, so I wouldn’t even consider them “prospects” anymore. Tabata was once the Yankees best positional prospect, but Austin Jackson and Jesus the catcher have surpassed him. Not to mention, there is no way the Yanks would have ever went foward with an outfield consisting of Jackson, Melky, and Tabata. They will always have some sort of proven, veteran player out there. Since Jackson will eventually get a shot in 2010 to take over an outfield spot (when Damon, Matsui, Abreu, and Nady are all gone), that means it was doubtful Tabata would have even gotten a chance to earn a spot in the near future (Melky or Jackson would have to be a horrible failure for that to happen, AND Tabata would have to actually start developing some of those 5 tools we have been hearing about for 2 years). So, the only loss is that Tabata is considered a somewhat top tier prospect, so he could have been used in another trade, but no other trade out there would have filled the hole in LF for this season, RF for next season, given them a right handed bat they desperately need, and given them the lefty they needed in the pen.
great rundown tedbrogen, i totally agree. i would only disagree with the trade if matt holliday could have been had for tabata and a few others. outside of that, i think nady will provide numbers that are slightly below what holliday would produce on an AL team this year (outside of coors field), so i’m very happy with the deal.
