A Good Fit?

The Seattle Times is reporting that the Yankees are somewhat interested in Seattle’s Jarrod Washburn. Washburn is the very definition of a back-end starter and he’s been performing well for the past two months. He is owed over $10 million into 2009 and the Mariners are looking to dump that salary, which is something that probably entices Brian Cashman. If he were traded, he wouldn’t require many prospects (of high value) as long as the other team takes on a sizable chunk of his salary.
That has Brian Cashman written all over it. A consistently mediocre starter (current 4.75 ERA) who can give you innings and will come on the cheap (talent-wise), is what Cashman is looking for. Plus, he’s a lefty with good numbers at Yankee Stadium. I wouldn’t be surprised if this is the move Cashman makes by the deadline. It’s not the sexiest move he could make, but it does makes some sense.
