Here We Go Again

June 9, 2008, 7:26 pm

The Yankees had an opportunity to go 2 games over .500, but alas, they couldn’t perform against Luke Hochevar, who is a good pitcher, but has been pounded throughout the season. Hochevar and the KC bullpen, including Joakim Soria and his magical unibrow, stifled the Yankee offense until the 9th, when we were seeing some signs of life. Melky Cabrera, with the bases loaded, swung on a knee high (maybe ankle high) pitch with 2 outs (did anyone else cringe when Robinson Cano stepped to the plate?). In that situation, when Soria, who normally has good control, seemed so flustered (he had just hit Chad Moeller), you would think that Melky would take maybe another pitch, especially one that low in order to get into an optimal count. But, no, that didn’t happen.

So the Yankees split a series with one of the worst teams in baseball, on a day where a win seemed like a foregone conclusion. Maybe the Yanks felt that way before the game and paid for it when they couldn’t manage much off Hochevar. Either way, this stop-and-go game the Yankees are playing while they remain just at the .500 mark is becoming a sad show for fans. The team is, for the most part, playing well, yet they still don’t have much to show for it (even when Mike Mussina pitches 8 strong innings). Frustrating stuff, indeed.

Dan Giese’s First ML Win

June 9, 2008, 5:58 am

Jack Curry (NY Times) has a nice read on Joba’s second start, which was extremely successful in terms of his “pitching growth”, and Curry also speaks on Dan Giese, who at 31, finally earned his first major league win (with the Yankees, of all teams). Baseball works in mysterious ways.
