Saturday’s Quick Bits: Bruney, Cashman, Cole

June 7, 2008, 6:36 pm

Couple of key notes on the Yanks:

  • Brian Bruney could be back the AS break. He has been cleared to start playing catch and the Yankees could definitely use him.
  • Now, according to Hank Steinbrenner, the Yankees will wait until after the season to discuss a contract extension with Cashman. No idea how or why we’ve seen seen conflicting reports on that matter.
  • Tyler Kepner has a nice piece on Gerrit Cole. The Yanks know it’ll be difficult to iron out a deal as long as Scott Boras represents Cole, but we’ll see what happens. Whenever you have a high school kid who could throw in the high 90’s, it’s probably best to get something done. Cole has a commitment to UCLA so that’s a big bargaining chip.

Just saw this video of the Rays-Red Sox fight on YouTube.

The music is perfect. I started cracking up so I thought I should share it.

Damon Wins It, Gets Scolded By Hank

June 7, 2008, 5:23 pm

Johnny Damon just went 6-for-6 against the Royals, and what better way to cap off your performance than with a walk-off “double” against one of the best closers in the game (Joakim Soria). Damon has been absolutely hot this year (Michael Kay and David Cone couldn’t say it enough) and has upped his BA to .326 after today’s game (a heart breaker for KC). However, even with Damon’s contributions, the Yankees haven’t been able to win a lot of games because of their current bullpen situation, which caused Damon to question Joba’s transition from the bullpen to the rotation, earlier in the week.

“We could have used him on our last road trip,” he added. “There’s no doubt about it. Could we have won those games? Maybe, maybe not.”

Now, Damon was simply stating the obvious. He was referring to the games that were blown due to our shoddy relief work from an assortment of subpar hurlers, and was just saying that the Yanks are going to have to get the ball to Mariano and figure things out. He even said that the move helps the Yankees in the long-run, which is the main reason for the move in the first place. Damon didn’t really say anything that was out of line although some papers may have positioned it that way in order to sell some copies.

Of course, Hank Steinbrenner had to react to Damon’s words and had the following to say:

“I love Johnny Damon as a player and a person, and he’s really doing the job right now. But let’s be honest here, he’s not Branch Rickey,” Steinbrenner told the Daily News in a telephone interview before Friday night’s game against the Royals, referring to the legendary baseball executive. “Johnny is a player, and as players, they all need to let the brain trust do the thinking and do the talking.

“The players just need to play and to worry about winning games.”

To be honest Hank, maybe you should quit talking and stick to the thinking aspect of your job (or at least let Cashman do it for you). Johnny Damon was obviously worrying about winning ballgames, that’s why he said what he said and there’s nothing wrong with that. He wasn’t bashing anyone, he was just stating the obvious and was saying that the team is going to have to get it done without Joba in the 8th. It would be nice to have him there but he understands the situation and this will help the club in the end.

I just thought I had to defend the man after seeing him hit the game-winner.

How about the team today? Rallying when down 5-1, rallying when down 10-6, rallying when Mo gives up a shocking homer in the 9th. They could have easily rolled over out there, but they’ve been putting up a fight lately. If this continues, Yankee fans may actually have to stay at the ballpark for an entire game.

Average Joes

June 7, 2008, 6:32 am

The Yankees have been okay this season. However, when you’re the Yankees, okay just doesn’t cut it (I know that sounds bad to other fans of other teams, but we’re talking about the 200 million dollar machine here). Tyler Kepner says it best in the following passage:

The Yankees have been relentlessly mediocre this season, and the loss moved their record a game under .500, at 30-31. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the Yankees are just the third team to have a .500 record at least 20 times through the first 60 decisions of a season.

Now, if “relentlessly mediocre” isn’t a befitting characterization, I don’t know what it is. On some days the team looks unbeatable, on others, they’re getting thoroughly embarrassed by another walking, talking embarrassment in the form of the KC Royals. So, the Yankees are okay…

Part of that can certainly be attributed to Alex Rodriguez and his .190 BA with RISP. What is that about? Honestly, I know Alex is coming off of an injury (sort of), but our cleanup hitter CANNOT hit under .200 with men on 2nd and 3rd. That’s simply unacceptable. If this continues throughout the year, you have to wonder about A-Rod’s ability to maintain that lineup spot. He’s the greatest player in the game, but if he can’t drive in a runner from 3rd, what’s the point of having him there? A-Rod is going to have to figure some things out. Even if he hits .250, that’s a marked improvement.

Darrell Rasner pitched a beauty today and with Chien-Ming Wang, Andy Pettitte, and Joba Chamberlain working out their own problems in the rotation, the Yankees absolutely NEED to win games where Rasner pitches well. I mean, the team is losing opportunities to strike in the AL East while the Sox are banged up and arguing in their own dugout. The Yanks NEED to strike NOW.
