Hank Has Found His Ace

May 18, 2008, 7:12 pm

Mark Feinsand of the Daily News has a writeup on Hank Steinbrenner that’s filled with some new Hank commentary. Hank addresses the positives he has seen in a floundering Yankee team and thinks that the club will eventually “go on a tear” but the lack of offense has certainly been frustrating for him and everyone else. He also talks about trying to be patient with the young arms in his rotation.

Here’s a quote from Hank about one of the lone bright spots on the team–Chien-Ming Wang.

“Wang has been incredible,” Steinbrenner said. “Nobody has been talking about him enough – including me – and he’s been lights-out for us. He’s one of the three or four best starting pitchers in baseball.”

Has Wang’s fast start helped Steinbrenner get past his assertion from the spring that the Yankees needed a true ace?

“We do have that ace,” he said, “but it doesn’t hurt to have two aces.”

The Santana remark in the end is typical Hank. But what good is an extra ace if the Yanks can’t score any runs?

Sunday Notes: A-Rod, Joba

May 18, 2008, 4:22 pm

A-Rod is scheduled to return Tuesday and all is well as he continues rehabbing his quad. He’s in Tampa getting some AB’s in and everyone in Yankeeland is happy that he’ll be returning. A-Rod’s production has taken some heat in the past, whether it’s from fans, writers, etc., but you cannot mistake how valuable he is when he’s in the lineup. The team is absent of any real power threat (other than Giambi, who’d rather hit into the shift) and it’s been so bad that it can’t get any worse when A-Rod comes back.

Also, shifting gears a bit, the Yankees are, for some reason, discussing Joba’s status as a starter. To be honest, I’m getting tired of hearing everyone discussing this issue, especially now. It’s not even relevant at this point in time, especially when the Yankee offense has been the biggest problem as of late. Everyone’s talking about what will happen down the line, but what about now? Right now, the Yankees are one of the worst team’s in baseball, and I for one could care less about Joba’s journey to starterdom.
