I really don’t know what to say about today’s game. The team just looks “flat” and one has to wonder about the offense, not necessarily the pitching (although there’s plenty of blame to go around for the loss). The bottom of the lineup has been dreadful and Melky Cabrera, who we heralded at the beginning of the season, hasn’t been doing much as of late. Our bench, which was originally thought of as a strength for Girardi, has now proven to be utterly ineffective. Shelley Duncan isn’t looking like much of a bench player and the guys who have been playing over their heads (like Alberto G. and Chad Moeller) are finally starting to bottom out.

Even A-Rod can’t change the complexion of this lineup overnight (he’ll be back soon and hit a homer in his first rehab game). But, with Posada back and A-Rod back, maybe the lineup will eventually shake itself out of its funk. The team is playing very poorly (they’re not just in last, but are firmly entrenched in that spot), and let’s hope they can win with their ace on the mound tomorrow.

Game 1: Yanks VS. Mets

May 17, 2008, 12:36 pm

Here’s the lineup (via PA):

YANKEES
Damon LF
Abreu RF
Jeter SS
Matsui DH
Giambi 1B
Cano 2B
Cabrera CF
Gonzalez 3B
Moeller C
Pettitte LHP

Pettitte VS. Santana will be a good matchup (if Pettitte is on).

Quick note on Brian Cashman’s future with the club. Although Hank Steinbrenner and Cashman don’t necessarily see eye-to-eye on some of their transactions and non-transactions, Hal Steinbrenner definitely seems to believe in Cashman’s work. Hal is the “silent partner” in all of this, but he has equal say when compared to Hank, so if he believes in Cashman, that’s bodes well for the Yankee-Cashman era to continue.
