Twins Happy With Their Prospect Package

February 3, 2008, 4:44 pm

If I see some baseball news today, you can believe I’ll post it up. Sad to say I’m still talking about Santana (even after the trade), simply because his trade has become such a story after a full winter of constant discussions about him.

Anyways, the Twins supposedly like the package they received from the Mets and they believe that the players within that package, address their biggest “needs” (particularly their future needs). The article also states that the Twins are excited about Carlos Gomez (CF) and that he (and Humber) could win a spot in the starting lineup come the 2008 season (although he’ll have to compete for it).

When asked about closer Joe Nathan, Bill Smith stated that he still believes the Twins can contend in their division (yeah right) and that they’re having ongoing discussions about how to make the team “better.” That doesn’t necessarily mean they’re still open to trading Nathan, but it does leave the door wide-open. You have to wonder if they’re more inclined to get rid of him now, especially since they didn’t get everything they wanted from the Santana trade (don’t let their PR fool you about “liking” the package).
