Santana Knows His Value

February 2, 2008, 11:40 pm

From the NY Times:

“At one point, with Jeff, Johan and I sitting in the room, Johan told him, ‘I know what I can do, I know what I’m worth, I want to bring a championship to this team,’ ” Greenberg said.

The Jeff here is Jeff Wilpon, the senior executive VP of the Mets. The Twins never had a chance at retaining Santana. He knew that, everyone else knew that. He knew he could get a landmark deal and he did. Now we’ll just have to wait and see whether or not Santana will actually deliver for the Mets.

Santana is a Met (Officially)

February 2, 2008, 4:01 pm

Johan Santana passed his physical. It’s all over, no looking back now. The deal will be officially announced today at 4:30 PM.

I guess we have to get used to this now. The Phillies better come up with a plan for the East, because a starting rotation of Johan Santana and a healthy Pedro Martinez is a scary one, indeed.

Whatever Works

February 2, 2008, 3:00 pm

According to Jayson Stark, at ESPN, the Yankees are “mildly interested” in ex-Royal, Mike Sweeney (along with a handful of other clubs). When healthy, Sweeney can hit, no doubt about that. But, he’s had reoccuring back problems over the past few years, which has severely hampered his playing time in Kansas City (the last two seasons).

If the Yankees have even a “mild interest” in Sweeney, it just goes to show you that they really have no faith in Jason Giambi at first base. He probably won’t play the position at all (full-time DH). They really cannot have Matsui sitting out, he’s too valuable a bat. It would be a bigger waste than having Jason Giambi’s fragile body on the bench.

Papelbon’s New Dance

February 2, 2008, 8:05 am

Have you seen it? He’s recruited Ortiz and Beckett to help him out.
