Jorge Wants to Stay

November 12, 2007, 10:31 am

Here’s some more information regarding Jorge Posada’s interview last night at the Knicks game.  He’s basically waiting it out to see if the Yankees will provide him with a better contract, or if the Mets will cough up an even greater amount (in both years and money).  Those are the only two teams he’s really negotiating with at this point in time.

That was interesting, but did anyone see this little nugget in the interview’s text?

When he was asked by reporters if he would talk to other teams, he said, “Yeah, yeah. Of course.” But he seemed to rule out going to Los Angeles to join Joe Torre, the new Dodgers’ skipper. “They have a catcher, they have a catcher,” Posada said. “I am only talking to teams that need a catcher, so for me right now it’s New York.”

Sometimes, really, I just cannot understand these questions.  Do they actually think that every Yankee is going to just run to the Dodgers because Torre is the new manager?  It makes absolutely no sense at all for an interviewer to even ask Jorge Posada that question.  The last time I checked, the LA Dodgers had an amazing young catcher (an All-Star) named Russell Martin who can not only hit 20 HRs, but he can also steal 20+ bags.  Come on now!  The guy is a catcher and he can steal 20 bases!

I mean, I understand the need to ask these sorts of questions because you need to get the “scoop” on the latest events.  However, similiar to the Bernie Williams (and even A-Rod) situation, not all Yankees are packing it in and travelling to LA.  The media is getting a bit hung up on every word Torre says and now Bernie Williams is practically slated to start RF next year for the Dodgers.  People tend to forget that although players like playing for certain managers, players also like playing for certain TEAMS.  The Yankees are a team that people want to play for, plain and simple.  They also have the most money which definitely helps a bit (sarcasm?).

Frankly, I’m surprised the media hasn’t gotten a quote from Tino Martinez about playing for the Dodgers.  What about Paul O’Neill?  Hell, I’m waiting for Carl Pavano to get released and head over there next (if he’s even mobile).
