Miggy Hurting A-Rod’s Payday?

According to the Los Angeles Times, the Angels are in the hunt for Miguel Cabrera.

The Florida Marlins want the Angels to include second baseman Howie Kendrick in any trade package for third baseman Miguel Cabrera, raising the possibility that the Angels might respond by asking for permission to negotiate with Cabrera and making their best trade offer contingent on reaching a contract extension with him.

The Angels are probably willing to do this move and then put Chone Figgins, who can play almost anywhere, at 2B.  Although Kendrick is extremely talented, Cabrera seems to be a HOF star in the making, and he’s considerably cheaper than Alex Rodriguez.  The Angels have some great pitching talent in their minors and could also deal some of them along with Kendrick for the highly-touted Cabrera.

What would this do to A-Rod’s market?  It would essentially deflate his stock, quite a bit, leaving only the Mets, Dodgers (who are also in the Cabrera Chase), and Red Sox (and maybe Giants) to pursue his talents.  Boras is a good agent, but when the Marlins make Cabrera available, A-Rod’s got some legit competition at the hot corner.  The Angels need a big bat to back up Vlad, and if A-Rod is too expensive, look out for Miguel.

In other news, Derek Jeter’s defense is coming into play with regards to the 3B situation.  Obviously, Jeter has declined at his position (defensively) and has an extremely limited range in the field.  In the NY Post today, Joel Sherman says that this is a concern for the Yankees in their 3B search, so they’re looking for a player that can provide some good defense.  This would effectively cross Miguel Tejada off the list of players the Yankees are pursuing (although he seems better suited for third), according to Sherman.

What do you guys think?  Eric Chavez seem like a possibility?
